Motivation

Over the past two or three years, boxing has been one of the items on my bucket list. During this time, I’ve been working with a personal trainer on a weight program that has helped me achieve a good level of muscle composition in my body (prior to this, my muscles were far from the ideal shape). However, due to spending prolonged periods sitting in a chair for work, this program alone isn’t enough to maintain my weight in good shape. I see boxing as a highly effective cardiovasular excercise that can prvoide an excellent alternative for weight loss.

For a Beginner

After compiling a list of gyms offering boxing programs, I contacted the first candidate via phone and asked a few questions as a beginner.

  • What items should I bring for the first class?
  • Is the program suitable for someone with no prior boxing experience?

To my relief, the answers were quite straightforward:

  • All I needed to bring were a water bottle, a towel for wiping sweat, suitable workout clothes, and indoor running shoes.
  • Additionally, the gym assured me that everyone starts with a clean state, so there was no need to worry about my lack of experience.

My First Boxing Class

During my first boxing class, the instructor had a structured plan that consisted of the following:

  • A 10-minute walk on the running machine
  • Three sets of 3-minute jump rope exercises with a 30-second break in between each set
  • A boxing lesson with the instructor
  • Two sets of 3-minute jump rope exercises with a 3-second break in between each set
  • Streching and relexation exercises

For my initial boxing lesson, I was taught the fundmentals, which included:

  • Basic defensive walking stance of hands and feet
  • Jabbing techniques
  • Straight punches
  • One-two combinations
  • One-two-straight combinations
  • One-two-three combinations
  • One-two-three-four combinations

Conclusion

Though I’m not particularly skilled at rythmic movements, the repetition of the fundamental techniques quickly got me engaged and excited about the boxing class. I became convinced that this form of excercise would be effective in achieving my weight-loss goals and shaping my body. As I continue to improve my skills, I look forward to the prospect of sparring with other individuals, which I believe will make the experience even more enjoyable!
